WELCOME LIEUTENANT COLONEL BERNARD AIKENS TO THE WOLF BATTALION!
Lieutenant Colonel Bernard Aikens has a remarkable background, with distinguished experience across the military, higher education institutions, and secondary-level educational environments. His ability to foster growth through applied knowledge and caring leadership has had a lasting impact on the many students and officers he has guided over the years.
His distinguished career as a commissioned military officer has taken him to Western and Eastern Europe and Asia and given him a deep appreciation for global cultures and diverse perspectives. As a Professor of Military Science, he has showcased his ability to develop future leaders with a strong commitment to service and national security. And he has continued this same dedication throughout his tenure as a Senior Army Instructor for Plano ISD, where he was also once named Teacher of the Year while serving on the Plano East campus.
Aikens views JROTC as a vital platform for preparing students with the life skills necessary for success and the leadership qualities required to make a lasting impact on the world. His dedication is reflected in the heartfelt testimonials from his former students. One cadet remarked, "Colonel cares about every single one of his cadets and helps every person individually become successful in life. He won't tell us to do something if he doesn't do it himself." Another shared, "He has made me see the real me and the leadership qualities I am capable of having." A final testimony emphasized, "He will always do everything he can to make us succeed. He takes our failures like it's one of his failures."
These powerful accounts of the retired lieutenant colonel showcase the profound and positive influence Aikens has on shaping not just his students' school experience, but their future success as well. And he wants to ensure they are prepared to lead with purpose and integrity in life.
Lieutenant Colonel Aikens brings a wealth of insight and enthusiasm to our program, and we are confident that his presence will greatly enhance the Wolf Battalion culture and lifestyle. Please join the Booster Club in extending a warm welcome to him as he begins this exciting new chapter with us!
Why JROTC?
We all know that every student can benefit from membership in JROTC - whether it's through improving their physical fitness, elevating their grades, giving back, building character, learning time management and leadership skills, or preparing for college - so that's why we want your help in getting the word out! To your friends, your social networks, you get the idea. It's an opportunity like no other, and we want more people to know!
Contrary to popular opinion, JROTC is NOT about going in the military; in fact, only a small percentage of students who participate even choose the military path (roughly 5% nationwide), however, what it does do is incorporate elements of military culture, such as uniforms, drills, and rank structure, to instill discipline, responsibility, and leadership skills that are valuable to all!
All that said: cadets who WANT to enlist post-high school receive a few significant advantages, including higher enlistment rank/pay grade opportunities and access to scholarships in senior ROTC programs not available to non-cadets.
So whether we have already met your cadet because they are returning for another year, or your son or daughter is kicking the tires about whether they want to join, we assure you this is a team unlike any other ... who welcomes all! We have a lot of exciting things planned for this year and can't wait to see you all again!
Behind the Scenes at Our 2024 Military Ball!
We've all seen our cadets develop a sense of pride, camaraderie and confidence in themselves as a result of their affiliation with Plano West JROTC. And while the uniform plays a key part in that -- by showcasing all of their achievements -- they can't wear their uniform every day.
That's where Wolf Battalion SWAG comes in!
It's the perfect choice for spirit days, football games ... pretty much ANY day they want to show their Wolf Battalion pride! We have a limited assortment of shirts and hoodies right now, with more on the way soon, so be sure and check it out. It's a great way for you to show your pride in them, too!
